Maybe you've seen the famous Picasso drawing that's often presented upside down, then used by right brain enthusiasts to learn to see, and therefore draw, more accurately. I was teaching a drawing class for middle school students recently and I wanted the same kind of drawing for them to work from, but I wanted something more modern. So I found a photo of Dave Chappelle, turned it upside down and drew it. When the students got to class, I left it upside down and turned on the projector. Then they drew the drawing and theirs came out great.
My drawing isn't a likeness, but it has a lively, expressive quality that doesn't always show up when I sit down to draw. I'm beginning to share in the enthusiasm that those right brain folks have been soaking in for years!
