For this reimagining of "I Love L.A." by Randy Newman, I worked with one of my all-time favorite creative directors, Shelley Leopold. It became an L.A. Tourism television commercial: I Love L.A. (see the link at the bottom of this post.)
An early draft featured Billie Eilish and Conan O'Brien riding up the PCH together.
Billie and Conan cruised various LA spots with some famous folk popping up occasionally in the background.
Larry David's New York turns out to be a Warner Brothers set.
A later iteration minus Conan, Billie and Larry, but still on Warner Brother lot. (This was a fun, weird angle to draw because the fake perspective and the "real" perspective are so out of whack.)
These are all watercolor and ink, but I will admit to messing with the lighting on Photoshop for this particular board.
And here is the final commercial, beautifully shot through with color and movement... and music--thanks, Randy Newman!
